Twenty years a painter in the Great Southern, now working one to one with NDIS participants out of a loft studio on York Street.

Serena McLauchlan is an Albany art therapist and painter who runs one to one art therapy sessions for NDIS participants. She trained as an artist first, graduating from Edith Cowan University in 2000 with a BA Visual Arts Honours, and spent two decades making and teaching art around the Great Southern before moving into therapeutic practice through the MIECAT Institute. Sessions run from her loft studio behind 280 York Street, in clients' homes, or in the Well-being Pod at Albany's Historic Whaling Station.

Why choose Serena McLauchlan Art Therapist?

  • One clear rate: $156.16 an hour covers the session, all art materials, note taking, report writing and data storage.
  • Three ways to meet: the York Street studio, a home visit, or the Whaling Station Well-being Pod.
  • Award-winning artist: Serena won the Great Southern Art Award for painting in 2014, with residencies from Albany primary schools to Jaipur.
  • Paint, clay or mixed media: sessions work through materials rather than talk alone, and no art experience is needed.
  • Clients show their work: two years of her clients' paintings went on public display as Taking Flight at Albany Public Library in June 2026.

[{"order":1,"question":"What is art therapy, and who is it for?","answer":"Art therapy uses making rather than talking as the way in. You work with paint, clay or mixed media alongside Serena, and what comes out of the process becomes the thing you look at together. It suits people who find words hard work, or who want a different way to sit with feelings, build confidence and work out what matters to them. Serena describes it as a safe space to explore feelings, needs, values and choices through the language of the materials."}, {"order":2,"question":"Do I need to be any good at art?","answer":"No. The point is the process, not the picture. Serena's clients have included people who had never held a brush before, and some have gone on to exhibit publicly. She adapts the materials to suit you, so if paint is not your thing there is clay, drawing or collage instead."}, {"order":3,"question":"What does a session cost, and can I use NDIS funding?","answer":"A one to one session is $156.16 an hour. That covers the session itself, all art materials, note taking, report writing and data storage, so there is nothing extra to budget for. Serena works with NDIS participants. Get in touch to talk through how your plan is managed and how invoicing would work for you."}, {"order":4,"question":"Where do sessions happen?","answer":"Serena works from her loft studio at the rear of 280 York Street in central Albany, and also does home visits. She runs drop-in creative sessions in the Well-being Pod at Albany's Historic Whaling Station, which are open to anyone visiting the site. Contact her to confirm current days and availability."}]
